On Thursday 16th April 2026, the Adrian Flux Waterfront Studio played host to one of the UK’s most exciting young songwriters, Tom A Smith. With doors opening at 7:30pm and an eager crowd filtering into the compact riverside venue, the night carried the promise of something special, an artist on the rise, embarking on his first UK headline tour.

Still only in his early twenties, Tom’s journey is already remarkable. He has steadily built a reputation as one of the UK’s most authentic new voices. Broken Static Magazine first saw Tom when he was supporting The Lottery Winners on their UK tour last year, and now he is heading out on his own, with support from the fabulous and friendly band, Hunnybuzz

The Norwich crowd, a mix of dedicated fans and curious newcomers, reflected that growing reputation. The Waterfront Studio is known for its close-quarters atmosphere and was the perfect setting. With low ceilings, a tight stage, and a crowd pressed right up to the barrier, every lyric and guitar line felt personal. There’s a certain electricity in venues like this, where the boundary between performer and audience dissolves, and Tom clearly thrived in that environment.

Opening with a punchy, guitar-driven track, “Let’s Go Dancing”, Tom and his band wasted no time asserting control of the room. His set leaned heavily on material from his EP from last year, “Say What You Want”, alongside older tracks like “Little Bits”, that have become staples of his live shows. Tracks such as “Fashion” and “What” showcased his knack for blending catchy hooks with sharp lyrics, while more introspective moments like “Beautiful Way” brought a hush over the crowd.

Between songs, his down-to-earth personality shone through, sharing anecdotes about life on the road and his Sunderland roots, reinforcing the authenticity that defines his songwriting.

The atmosphere built steadily throughout the set. Early numbers were met with appreciative nods and scattered singalongs, but by the midpoint, the entire room seemed locked in. The front rows shouted singing lyrics, while those further back swayed in unison. By the encore, the energy peaked, an explosion of applause, cheers, and a sense that everyone present knew they were witnessing an artist on the cusp of something bigger.

What makes a Tom A Smith show so compelling is not just the music, but the sense of closeness. There’s a feeling that each performance is another step up for him, unfolding in real time. Playing a venue like the Waterfront Studio, intimate yet packed with energy, it serves as a reminder of where he’s come from, even as his career continues to expand.

In the end, the Norwich show was more than just another tour date. It was a snapshot of an artist bridging the gap between grassroots beginnings and wider recognition. For those in attendance, it felt personal, magical, and memorable, exactly what live music should be.
