On a crisp Saturday night at The Adrian Flux Waterfront Studio, Norwich’s indie and pop lovers filled the intimate space for one of the standout gigs of Independent Venue Week 2026. Headlining the night on 31st January, rising UK act Afterdrive showcased why they’ve become one of the hottest young bands on the circuit — blending energetic live performance with infectious songs and genuine crowd connection.

Afterdrive — an Ipswich-based four-piece made up of Ben Watts (vocals), Joe Watts (drums), Luke Ellis (lead guitar), and Edward “Ed” Ruff (bass) — have rocketed from local jam sessions to national airplay and bigger stages in just a few short years. What started in late 2022 as casual playing between siblings Ben and Joe soon expanded into a tight, cohesive band that’s now one of the most promising names in the contemporary UK alt-pop/indie scene.

Their sound is an amazing balance of melodic pop hooks and indie loudness, creating anthems that feel both uplifting and grounded. The latest single “Necklace”, embodies this aesthetic and its energy, set the tone for the evening as the opening song for the band.

As the crowd gathered in front of the stage, there was a large buzz of anticipation at Norwich’s Waterfront, providing the perfect place for Afterdrive’s headline show, where fans ranged from devoted followers to newcomers intrigued by the band’s rapid rise.

When Afterdrive took to the stage, the energy was instant. Ben Watts’ powerful vocals cut through the air with confidence and charisma, while Luke Ellis’ guitar work brought sharp, dynamic melodies that echoed through the venue. Ed Ruff’s bass lines anchored the rhythm with a bold punch, and Joe Watts’ drumming drove the set forward with tight precision and infectious momentum.

The setlist was a balanced mix of newer tracks and fan favourites, with standout moments including new single “Necklace”, as well as “Velvet”, “Cars” and the energetic “Often”, which had the room singing and swaying in shared exhilaration. The anthemic choruses and emotional drive translated flawlessly live, capturing the intensity and vulnerability that make Afterdrive’s recorded work so compelling.

Other highlights included songs with upbeat hooks and layered harmonies that pushed the crowd into sing-alongs, and quieter, more emotional moments, such as “What She Needs”, where the band’s musical nuance shined through. These contrasts kept the performance engaging, holding attention from the first chord to the final encore.

What truly set the night apart was the connection Between Afterdrive and their audience. Ben’s warm chatter between songs revealed a band both grounded and grateful for the journey so far — from small local gigs to BBC Radio 1 airplay and support slots on big tours.

By the time the final chords rang out from “Stick Around” and the cheers faded, it was clear this wasn’t just another gig: it was a celebration. Afterdrive proved they’re not just rising — they’re thriving, building a lively future for British indie-pop with passion, precision, and undeniable stage presence.
If this Norwich performance was anything to judge by, Afterdrive’s star is very much on the ascent.
