If you’re on the hunt for a band that marries sun-soaked melodies with deeply personal lyricism, look no further than Hunny Buzz — Bristol’s indie-pop quartet. Bursting onto the scene in 2020, the band is made up of Lydia Read (vocals), Rowan Barfoot (guitar), Ben Laver (drums), and Ewan Base (bass). Their sound is as infectious as it is intimate — a sparkling blend of grunge, surf-pop, and heartfelt storytelling.
Since their formation, Hunny Buzz has carved out a distinctive niche in the UK’s indie circuit. Drawing inspiration from acts like Wolf Alice, Beach Bunny, and even a touch of Taylor Swift, they channel a kind of dreamy chaos — where shimmering guitar riffs meet raw, emotionally intelligent lyrics. The result is music that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly new.

Their 2024 debut EP, Welcome to Our Garden, introduced listeners to a band unafraid to be vulnerable. Tracks like “Palpitations” don’t shy away from themes of mental health, with frontwoman Lydia Read opening up about her experience with OCD. That unfiltered honesty, delivered with disarming charm, sets Hunny Buzz apart. These are songs written not just to be heard, but to be felt.

Following on, their sophomore EP Growing Pains (2025) explores the messy, magical terrain of friendship and self-discovery. Standout track “Maisy” is an ode to childhood bonds that weather the storm of adulthood — a nostalgic and moving anthem delivered through layered harmonies and shimmering instrumentals.

Live, Hunny Buzz is just as magnetic. They played Voodoo Daddy’s Showroom in Norwich, UK on the 29th May and we were lucky to witness this show.
The beating heart of the band, Ben, started off the drum intro of “Sweet Perfume” and the band filled the small basement room with their sound, setting the evening’s tone.
Carrying on, “Mine”, “Now I Can Get Over You”, “Maisy” and “Joyride” joined the set list of this intimate show, captivating the audience and showcasing the bands story telling through music.

A break in the set led to a little bit of banter with each other, engaging with the crowd and sharing stories before coming back together with “Hush Hush”. The catchy chorus making bodies move in the room to the sound.
The final run including “Blistered”, “Nice Guy”, “Chess Game” and ending the show on “Blue” was a perfect choice to showcase the new album “Growing Pains”, bringing the night full circle and leaving the crowd wanting more.

The band’s chemistry was palpable, with each member contributing to the dynamic performance. Rowan’s melodic guitar lines, Ewan’s engaging bass grooves, and Ben’s tight drumming provided a solid foundation for Lyd’s expressive voice, showing what a rising force they have become

Whether you’re drawn in by their sunny guitar lines or their unflinching emotional honesty, one thing is clear: Hunny Buzz is a band on the rise, and their garden is just beginning to bloom.
Keep your eyes (and ears) on them — because if you’re not already a fan, you will be soon.
